Would you talk about teaching methods which are used in SBC?
Hannah:以学生为中心的教学方法
Essentially, we espouse a learner-centered methodology. We consider the student as
an individual, who comes to the learning experience with his or her own skills, strengths,
learning styles and motivations. The job of the teacher is to find out about the students, and
develop strategies to engage them in learning as a participative process. In order to
implement a learner-centered approach, we use a range of learning formats and
environments, including lectures, as well as seminars and tutorials. We focus on keeping
groups as small as possible, in order to maximize interaction between teachers and
learners, and between learners and their classmates. A great deal of learning, however,
takes place outside the classroom.
我们采用的是以学生为中心的教学方法。在SBC， 学生被看做是独立的个体，有自己的学习风格、技巧、优势和动力。老师的主要工作就是多去了解学生的这些独特之处，帮助学生根据自身的情况，制定适合自己的学习计划。在SBC，我们在讲座课、小组讨论课和辅导课的授课过程中始终贯穿以学生为中心的教学方法。除讲座课外，我们一直坚持小班，小组授课，使师生之间，学生与学生之间的课堂互动达到最大化。然而，大量的学习任务是需要学生在课下独立完成的。
Independent learning is a fundamental tenet of a learner-centered approach; we want
students to take charge of their learning and make their own decisions about exactly what to
learn and how. We have a library, of course, to support this, but we also emphasise
technology-based learning. We don’t consider learner autonomy to mean a studying alone,
without any support. We take a more collaborative approach to the concept; we feel that the
teacher has a fundamental part to play, working with the learner to help him or her achieve
success. The teacher and the learners are seen as co-collaborators, working together to
construct knowledge and successful learning.
培养学生独立自主的学习能力是以学生为中心的教学方法的基础。我们培养学生自己掌握学习进度，自己决定学什么，怎样学。SBC 的图书馆学习资源丰富，还有网络学习平台。在SBC，老师培养学生独立自主的学习能力，并不是指让学生一个人在没有指导和帮助的情况下学习，而是一种师生之间合作的学习形式。在学习过程中，老师帮助指导学生有效地学习并取得好成绩。老师和学生之间是学习中的合作伙伴，一起构建知识体系，取得良好的学习成绩。
In this sense, the teacher is often less of an authority figure than in some more
traditional contexts. He or she has a variety of roles, one of the main ones being to plan
and implement activities which will facilitate effective learning. The teacher often also takes
on the role of counsellor and resource, both in and out of the classroom; the teacher is
someone that the student can approach for advice and for information, based on the
learner’s own identification of his or her needs. The learners, in this model, are the most
important participants in the learning process. They are actively engaged, participate fully in
every class, and are expected to take responsibility and take the initiative for how learning
progresses.
在SBC，老师不再完全是传统意义上学生学习过程中的权威角色，而是有了更多的职责。这其中包括通过授课和设计其它教学活动来帮助学生有效地学习，在课上和课下接受就学习问题的咨询和解答，根据学生个人学习情况有针对性地给予建议和指导。而学生在SBC则是整个学习过程中最重要的部分。他们需要上好每节课，积极主动的学习。
Would you share your thoughts about the value and meaning of launching T1
Scholarship Programme?
Hannah:独立学习能力和批判思维能力
Through participation in this programme students should achieve several learning
outcomes which will be of value to their future studies and careers. By the end of the week,
regardless of whether students are chosen as one of the ten finalists, all participants in the
classes will have learned valuable knowledge and skills. They will all have created and
delivered an academic, research-based presentation. They will have developed their
academic skills in areas such as research, referencing, expressing and supporting points in
English. They will have developed their speaking skills, and should have become more
confident and engaging speakers. Finally they will have experienced a collaborative learner-
centered learning environment, and will have developed skills for independent learning and
critical thinking.
通过T1的启航训练营活动，学生可以学到许多对自己未来大学学习和职业发展有用的知识。一周过后，不管学生的考核成绩能否进入前十名，他们都将收获许多宝贵的知识和技能。学生将学会如何通过运用规划组织、研究调查和彩排练习来完成一个学术演讲。他们还将学到研究方法、学术引用、用英文表达和阐述观点。另外，学生的英文口语会得到很大的提高。具体表现在，用英文表达时，更自信更积极主动。最后，通过一周的训练营，同学们将体验到什么是鼓励团队协作，以学生为中心的学习环境，并在这样的环境中拓展自己的独立学习能力和批判思维能力。

Chinese education is quite different from British education. In China, for most of high
schools, teachers are the center of teaching. They normally focus on the input of knowledge.
So many students in T1 programme may find it quite challenging to adjust themselves to
the British education that students are the center of teaching and taught to be independent
learners.
As one of most experienced teachers, do you have any suggestions or method to help
students to deal with the challenge?
Ben Griffiths:老师温暖，学生轻松
Relax, trust themselves, be themselves, don’t be worries to make mistakes as that’s a
natural and important part of the process. Teachers need to focus on creating a warm,
supportive, relaxed, but focussed and professional atmosphere, and as the leader of the
group the teacher has to personify all of these traits themselves as well.
面对这样的教育文化挑战，我给学生的建议是放轻松，相信自己，做自己。不用担心犯错误。犯错误是人之常情，也是求学道路上的必经之路。老师在授课时，最好为学生创造一个温暖，有爱，轻松的学习环境。同样，老师自己也应该要求自己做到这几点。
